DUBAI (UNITED ARAB EMIRATES), 29 November, 2011: Nissan’ industry-leading vision for sustainable mobility was outlined to a distinguished audience of regional and international delegates at the recently-concluded 2011 Energy Dialogue, organised by King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC) in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh.
Under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, the event ran from November 20 to 22 under the theme ‘Partnering for a Sustainable Future'. The opening address was delivered by His Excellency Ali I. Al-Naimi, Saudi Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Chairman of KAPSARC’s Board of Trustees.
Entitled ‘Nissan’s Vision for Sustainable Mobility’, Nissan’s presentation was delivered by Minoru Shinohara, Senior Vice-President, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., global leader of the company’s technology division at a topical discussion on ‘transportation technologies and fuels in fast-growing economies’.
“Four big issues surround the automobile industry globally: congestion, traffic accidents, energy, and global warming,” Mr. Shinohara said.
“At this conference, Nissan outlined how it plans to contribute in finding solutions to the latter two through the electrification of the vehicle and its utilsation of renewable energy,” he added.
He said there is a need to improve efficiency in energy generation and its conversion to powering vehicles, lessening global dependency on oil and utilising diversified sources of primary energy.
“Electricity is the best fuel for the vehicle, having higher efficiency of energy conversion to driving force.” he pointed out. Electrification encompasses a series of technologies from start/stop systems, hybrid and plug in hybrid systems, battery electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles.
Addressing the issue of CO2, he said: “A significant number of ‘zero emission vehicles’ and ‘clean energery generation’ will be necessary. The adoption of electrification is certain, however, we need to consider various market conditions, economic forces, energy/fuel, traffic/road conditions and lifestyle variation.
“We need diversified approaches towards the goal of zero-emission vehicles – delivering the right technology to the right market at the right time is critical,” Mr. Shinohara added.
He concluded his presentation by mentioning the introduction of the Nissan LEAF, the world’s first 100% production electric family car. “EV mass production has just been started,” he said.
The 2011 Energy Dialogue attracted more than 700 delegates from around the world. In addition to Mr. Shinohara, Saudi and international speakers presented perspectives on critical contemporary issues over eight sessions.
